SSD vs HDD (Samsung 830 SSD vs 5400 rpm HDD)

Comparing an SSD (Solid State Drive) with a standard 5400 rpm HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

The disks used in this video were: a Samsung 830 128 GB SSD and an Apple branded 320 GB HDD (made by Hitachi) found in all baseline Mac models.

Tests:

1) Boot time HDD:1m 30s SSD:13.3s (7x faster)

2) Shut down time HDD: 5.3s SSD:1.5s(3.5x faster)

3) Sleep time HDD:16.3s SSD:7s(2.3x faster)

Waking up from sleep HDD 5.2s (not in the video) SSD 1.1s (5x faster)

4) Opening 167 apps HDD 30min SSD 3min (10x faster)

5) Copy/Duplicate/Compressing time Copying a 1GB file: HDD 48s SSD 6s (8x faster) Compressing(archiving) a 1GB file: HDD 1m SSD 50s

!!! While compressing a file, the CPU is the sole component that does the job, which means that the faster your CPU is, the faster a file will compress. The drive is only helping the CPU write the file (which is the 10s difference between the SSD and the HDD).

6) Black Magic Speed test:
HDD: Write 29mb/s Read 29mb/s
SSD: Write 307mb/s (10x faster) Read 452 mb/s(15.5x faster)

Formats: HDD 4 SSD 61 (15x more writable formats)

7)Battery

HDD up to 10h of wireless browsing (10% brightness)
SSD up to 12h of wireless browsing (2h improvement)

8)Movement:
HDD extremely sensible to movement, drops, shock
SSD immune to any sort of moment, including drops and shock

9)Noise: the SSD is completely silent

10) Price: 40$-120$-xxx
